On Thursday 31st October 2019 – 5pm UK time -Fernandes Wanda, current PhD student(Final Year)in Development Studies (awarded the Mo Ibrahim GDAI Scholarship) will discuss the recent Angolan political transition from a sustainable development perspective.
Although the recent political transition in Angola, from Dos Santos to João Lourenço, is regarded as exemplary by the MPLA ruling elite in Angola, the truth is that this replacement has heightened tensions within the MPLA that threatens the country’s political stability. Dos Santos (2013) emphasized on the creation of a “strong and efficient national entrepreneurs and private investors to drive the creation of more wealth and employment” whereas Lourenço, emphasis on total liberalization through the privatization of state assets might allow vested interests to consolidate their grip over the economy, now through market mechanisms. So, after 2 years in power what has Lourenço accomplished to ensure that Angola finds its path for sustainable development? Can the Angolan economy diversify? What are the challenges ahead? These and other questions will be discussed in this webinar.
The webinar will be chaired by Professor Carlos Oya (SOAS)
