In 2011, SOAS and the Mo Ibrahim Foundation organised two residential schools – the first was held in Indy Village, Maputo, Mozambique, 4th – 8th April. The intensive week-long programme was organised in collaboration with Instituto de Estudos Sociais e Económicos (IESE) and addressed debates around Governance for Development in Africa. The themes for the 2011 school were focussed around the political economy of development, and the discussion touched on a variety of areas including economic growth, inequality and poverty, health, taxation, aid and new donors.
The Mozambique residential school was a great success, involving 22 participants from very diverse professional backgrounds, including policy makers, academics, civil society representatives and government officials from countries across Africa, in an engaging and informative series of discussions.
